Paul:
Windows when installed write the first sector of the disk.
Using a DOS diskette, you can bring back your disk to life that way:

1) Have (or create) a bootable DOS or MSDOS or OpenDOS diskette with FDISK
on it, and then after boot, type:
  fdisk /mbr
I will look that nothing happened (very fast, one sector write, no
feedback).
Then you should be able to reboot from hard-disk.

2) If you also have several other partitions on the same disk, used by
Linux, you may want to reinstall Linux, from scratch and ask the software
to install with the boot loader being GRUB (bettre than Lilo) at the
beginning of the partition.
Red Hat will then install Linux wher you want.

3) Partionning the hard disk:
When you install Windows, hopefully you did let some space for Linux.
Then create for Linux:
  a) a small (ext3) partition (a few megabytes say 5 MB) that you will
format as ext3, and format, and mount pint will be "/boot" (no quotes!).
  b) a regular partition at least 5 GB (ext3) where you install Linux and
mounted as "/" (no quotes!).

You may have more partitions if you wish, including another small one for
LVM, but this is for later!

3) Install Red Hat Linux (suggest Fedora Core 3: free dowload), as mentioned
above (you have to go to expert install mode):

/dev/hda1 (1st partition) is probably your windows partition.
/dev/hdax (about 5MB) mounted as /boot
/dev.hdax Large, is you "standard" Linux partition.

Ask the GRUB boot loader to be at the beginning of the partition mounted
as /

Then Linux will install as dual boot, and you will be able to use both
Windows and Linux.

Note: It is a good idea after this to create Linux boot diskette, and to
save (on a diskette for exemple) your mbr sector using the Linux dd
command. (dd if=/dev/hda1 etc......)
So if you distroy your mbr sector, restoring it will only take a minute,
booting for example from a Knoppix (or other) CD based bootable Linux
(great tool to have).

Have fun.
