Hello Everybody;
I m new to the Linux world. I intend to set up a dual boot system on a
P3 1 Gig,256 Rd RAM, 40 Gb hard drive, with windows XP (running on the
system already), having 2 fat partitions of 20gb each. Partition 1 has
around 14gb of free space available and partion 2 has around 17gbs of
free space.
I d come across few linux forums and other sources of info on the
concerned matter. The information has either been directed to people
having two hard drives or it had been a bit too technical.
For what i had understood though is that linux has to make 3
partitions viz /root, /boot and /swap. The /boot partition seems very
important. I understand that /boot would have a boot loader eg grub or
lilo, and that the boot loader should reside in MBR. I get confused
when people say that since BIOS cant read beyond cylinder 1024 which
is approximately first 8.5gbs on the hard disk drive; one must make
/boot in that initial 8.5gbs. Please advise me how could that be done
as I intend to keep linux solely on partition 2. I d also come across
a notion of resizing the "windows xp partition" using Partition magic
8. Why is that needed if i may ask.
Secondly as i try to install Fedora Core 3 and the set up gets to the
point where it needs to partition the drive, and i choose to
automaticaly partition it, do i run the risk of losing Windows Xp and
all the associated data on the disk, or i can restrict the set up /
anaconda to use partition 2 only. Moreover how can i make /root and
/swap on partition 2 and /boot on partion 1.
Lastly I intend to use grub, would i have to alter the configuration
of this boot loader to get to choose which OS i need to load. If yes
then how is that established.
( I m sorry for being too detailed.)
Your assistance would be greatly appriciated.
Kind Regards.
