I am a Linux newbie. I have a working dualboot FreeDOS/W2K system using the NT
bootloader. DOS is on C:, W2K is on D: (but ntloader is on C:\ and in the
bootsector), and linux is installed on a different partition.
I installed Fedora Core 4 onto a new partition but did not install grub because
I don't want to wipe out my current bootsector. Mount point was / (nothing
special), just a stock workstation installation.
Then I used a utility that makes grub a choice on the W2K boot menu, and I can
get to the grub shell that way.
Now using grub, I type:
root (hd0,6)
or
root (hd0,6)/boot
and get confirmation this is the ext2fs partition.
Then I need to identify the FC4 kernel.
I tried
kernel (hd0,6)/vmlinuz
kernel /boot/vmlinuz
and various permutations using vmlinuz and kernel 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-i686 (I am
assuming this is the name of the kernel, I don't know)
No luck.
I used the FC4 rescue disk to mount my installation and browse (using my
limited knowledge of linux commands) and cannot find the kernel or vmlinuz
file. (It is also not on drive C: anywhere.)
Please tell me what I have to type to get the FC4 kernel identified by grub?
Where is the kernel? Do I not have kernel installed and I must copy it from
the rescue CD? Note I do not have a working Linux system yet; all I have that
can boot is the rescue CD.
The last step I know is "boot" but so far I haven't been able to try that one.
TIA
