Oh, also forgot, to mention a few things:

Redhat 9 is no longer supported, so you should try Redhat's Fedora core 3
or 4 ("http://fedora.redhat.com"), if you want more bleeding edge. If you
want something more long term, use CentOS 4 ("http://www.centos.org"),
which is Redhat Enterprise Linux clone.

I run both Fedora Core 4 & CentOS 4 on my 2 old PCs at home (400/500Mhz
Celerons), and both are great/rock solid.

My office PC started off with Fedora Core 1 & has been upgraded to the
version as they were released, and now up to Fedora Core 4. They all
seamed to support the Radeon 9200 without needing to support it. As such,
I can tell you with certainly Fedora Core 3/4 does support the Radeon 9200
video cards out of the box. Everything worked correctly after
installation, but to make it even more stable, run the YUM updates.

* Warning: During a graphical installation of Fedora Core & CentOS, your
display many look a little weird or off center, as I've noticed that with
all Fedora Core or Redhat clone installations I've done. However once you
can make it through the graphical installation and then run your YUM
updates, you will be ok. If you really have a problem seeing it in
graphical installation mode, use the text installation mode to be safe and
then run YUM. Either way, things should work smoothly after that.

As I keep pointing out, it is important to run your YUM updates - as I
know there were updated RPMs which made things more stable - such as with
CD burning, Alsa (audio), and the video cards. By running a no longer
support OS (such as Redhat 9) you cannot take advantage of their current
upgrades, security updates, newer drivers & bug fixes.

And with your audio issues, the only snag I hit with audio recently was
that Alsa keep resetting the volume levels to '0' and muting all of the
devices (mic, line, cd, primary volume, and master volume) upon reboot.
Some web surfing has revealed a fix which has fixed this in all of my
PCs. Run your YUM updates first, to be sure you have the nest Alsa
packages, and then do this:

------------------------------------
How to Setup ALSA to force volume control reset in FC4 & CentOS, when
soundcard is ok, but is muted with 0% volume when rebooted.

When the ALSA sound for some reason is muted by default, you can try
adjusting the levels by using 'alsamixer' then see if sound works.

$ /usr/bin/alsamixer

See 'man alsamixer' for the details and options.

Some have edited the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file and added;

# Set/restore the Alsa sound volume levels /bin/aumix-minimal -f
/etc/aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1;

And created the /etc/aumixrc file, sample below:

vol:75:75:P
pcm:75:75:P
speaker:75:75:P
line:75:75:P
mic:75:75:R
cd:75:75:P
igain:75:75:P
line1:75:75:P
phin:75:75:P
video:75:75:P

This sets the default volume levels (example sets the levels at 75%).

------------------------------------

The setting up of the 'r.local' file, is what actually fixed my volume
problems.

Anyway, between the site I noted in my last post on getting linux
installed/working on a Laptop and this info, you should be much more
closer to a fully working Acer Laptop running a Redhat Linux version.

I hope this helped you a bit...
Also if I can help further, email me.
