    OK, I tried the following:

    1. boot into "linux rescue".
    2. modify grub.conf to boot XP from (hd1, 1)
    3. grub-install --recheck /dev/sda

grub was installed on the correct MBR (hard drive 1 with XP). After
rebooting, I got the options to boot either XP or Fedora. But neither
    worked.

When booting Fedora, I got the following error:
    root (hd0,1)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7.
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition.

When booting XP, I got the following:
    rootnoverify (hd1, 1)
    chainloader +1

Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format.

    device.map shows:

    (fd0) /dev/fd0
    (hd0) /dev/hdc
    (hd1) /dev/sda

Originally it only contains the first two mappings. The 3rd was added
    after I did a grub-install.

fdisk -l of /dev/hdc and /dev/sda shows basically what I listed in my
    original e-mail with

/dev/hdc2 being the root (/) mount of Fedora and /dev/sda2 the C: drive
where XP was installed. Both of these two rows of the fdisk output
showed a '*' at the boot column.

    grub.conf is as follows:

    title Fedora Core
        root (hd0,1)
        kernel /boot/vmlinuz...
        initrd /boot/initrd....
    title Windows XP
        rootnoverify(hd1,1)
        chainloader +1

I've had three sleepless nights and rebooted the machine at least 50
times. There must be something that I missed. I'd appreciate it if
someone could steer me to the right direction...

    Thanks,

    ----Ryan
