FC4 and new initrd

I'm trying to make a new initrd image for FC4. I see that the
modules.cpz is missing when I run mkinitrd filename <kernel version>

Can't understand why? When I boot my system with this initrd over a PXE
it hangs with a kernel panic with "VFS: unable to mount root fs...."
error message. (because it can't find modules.cpz I guess). This is
with kernel version 2.6.11.1-1369.

Secondly, I have noticed that the initrd files are cpio files and not
mountable loop iso files as there were in Redhat. Can somebody point me
to documentation that explains opening an existing (FC4 stock) initrd
and adding custom modules to it and re-making an initrd image?

Thank you very much.
Ray
