Ok, thanks for the help. I found the solution and if it can be useful
to somebody, here's what it was. But I still don't understand why it
was working fine for months and then stopped working for no reasons.

Before installing fedora core 4, redhat 9.0 was installed instead and I
was using the win2k boot loader to boot redhat. I made a copy of the
redhat 9.0 boot sector using :
    dd if=/dev/hdb6 of=bootsect.lnx bs=446 count=1

When I installed fedora, I didn't change the bootsect.lnk file on
win2k's boot loader since everything was working without problems. I
know it's stupid I should have made another copy of the boot sector,
but it was working ... so ...

Anyway I just made another copy of the current (fedora) sector and
replaced the bootsect.lnx file and everything came back to normal. I
still don't understand why it was working before.

    Thanks again for the help
