Then fix the errors, boot into rescue mode from the FC4 CD and use e2fsck.
Or (better yet !?!) use the FC4 CD in rescue mode and run partimage instead
of the SystemRescueCD, Download and build from the 6.4 source rpm (since I
don't see one for FC4);

Yep, ext3 is basically ext2 with journaling;

Not 100% sure for either question....
The backup should be OK, but it would be a good idea to check and verify.
As far as the boot sectors, I really don't know. I used qtparted to copy and
expand my partitions when I moved to a larger HD for my laptop without any
problems. Connected my new 40-gig HD to the laptop and setup the old 10-gig
in an external USB enclosure, booted with the SystemRecsueCD copied then
expanded the partitions (left the /boot and /swap partitions the same size)
I want to one at a time(root, /home and /usr).
