Boot-up Fails after change SCSI adapter

I have replaced an Adaptec 1542 SCSI adapter with an Adaptec 2930CU, and
now I can't boot. I assume I don't need to recompile the standard kernel
I'm using, but can't find anything to change except for
/etc/modules.conf, where I've replaced:

alias scsi_hostadapter aha1542
   with
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx

I can boot "linux rescue" from both diskette and cd-rom, and can access
all file systems. In either case, the new scsi adapter is recognized
and the appropriate "aic7xxx driver" is loaded, and all existing LINUX
(ext2) fs are mounted (on two drives).

When I run "fsck /dev/sd{a|b}{N}" I get a message about the filesystem
not being umounted properly (a system crash was the precipitating event
that resulted in the new adapter), and fsck seems to clean up all fs
just fine. But, if I unmount them and shutdown, when I start up again in
rescue mode, these devices appear "dirty" again. More important, if I
go into update mode, with the idea of updating the RH62 (corrupted and
wasn't booting before) fs I have on the first drives (I've been running
RH72 on the second drive), I get a message about "one or more of your
filesystems for your LINUX system was not unmounted cleanly .." and the
update process bombs. (I've repeated this process several times.)

When I boot my old RH72 system with or without the above changes to
/etc/modules.conf, it starts the bootup just fine, and looks normal
until it (still, even after modules.conf changes) trys to load the
aha1542 module:
....
Loading scsi_mod module
SCSI subsystem driver Revision 1.00
Loading sd_mod module
Loading aha1542 module # why won't it load aic7xxx?
/lib/aha1542.o init_module: No such device # understandable
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
ERROR: /bin/insmod exited abnormally!
Mounting /proc filesystem
Creating root device
Mounting root filesystem
mount: error 19 mounting ext2
pivotroot: pivot_root(/sysroot,/sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 220k freed
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

I've tried running depmod with thought that I need to run modprobe, but
depmod won't run because it can't write to the disk, and I gather that
modprobe only changes the booted version of LINUX, not the system that
resides on disk. I should add, I'm using LILO, not GRUB.

What I'd most like to do is adjust my configuration so I can boot my
existing RH72 system, but I can do a new/upgrade over my old RH62 if
that was the only way to go about it (which I suspect it is not!).

Any hints/advice will be appreciated.
