Cannot surf websites when I do backup (tar)

Hi

I have a Linux server (RH8) which performs as a router using iptables
and connects my network of 20 computers to the internet via cable or
dial up modem. It also performs the job of a file server (samba) and
local post office (sendmail, fetchmail, ipop3d)

It works great till I start my backup, which uese 'tar'. When the
backup starts, I can ping websites like google and yahoo with a some
minor packet loss from my workstations, but I get 'page not found' on
my browsers. Sometimes it just says 'Website found' and gets stuck.

The moment I kill the backup process, BINGO, everyone can surf the
Internet.

My Hardware Configuration is P-III ASUS board, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB IDE
HDD and SCSI 4/8 GB DAT drive. The data size to backup ranges from 3-4
GB on a given day.

Currently I do the backup at night, but I was curious to find a
solution so that backup can take place in the day time as well.

Any ideas on how to get tar to uses less of the CPU, MEMORY and HDD
resources and not be such a hog? ;-)

Or do I have to upgrade my hardware to a SCSI HDD? :-(

Regards

Rishi
