Redhat 9 cd player - stops and starts

When I insert an audio CD into my Sony 48X CD-R, cd player launches,
but 10 seconds into the song, it begins to pause for 2-3 seconds and
then continue. The cycle continues after that...about 10-15 seconds of
the song, then a 2-3 second pause. The same thing happens when I try
to play CDs in xmms, Totem, etc. Is it doing a "read-ahead"?

Is there a way to fix this?
