mysqldeamon ended fast

hi
i was trying to execute
/etc/init.d/mysql start
i get
starting mysqld with database /var/lib/myql
030927 7:1 mysql-ended

it seems to me the daemon started and ended at the same monent. so how
can i let daemon continue?
i am using redhat 8 and mysql 4.0.15 server and client
