I asked a question to validate my assumption and to point in the right
direction if that assumption turned out to be true. It's like when you're
speaking to someone who doesn't know a language that well: when they
mispronounce something, or fumble with grammar, you can give a blank stare
and say "Huh? You make no sense!", or you can try and understand what was
meant, and ask a question about that. With the first approach, the speaker
ends up intimidated and uncomfortable speaking at all -- even if your goal
was to force them to speak correctly. With the second, they eventually
become comfortable with and learn the language.
