updatedb runs too often

On my RedHat 9 system (Shrike with kernel 2.4.20-8) I've noticed that
updatedb runs too often; seems like every couple of hours. And, as is
well known, it uses a lot of resources.

Since my system (a laptop) is not on 24/7 it occurred to me that anacron
may be running queued up calls from days when the machine wasn't on. Is
this possible? If this is the case, how can I ensure that updatedb
does not run more than once a day regardless of how long the machine has
been off? (I've not made ANY changes to the default cron or init settings.)

Thanks.
