Figured it out.

I *thought* that one could only have one of iptables and ipchains active
at one time. Furthermore, given that it was alater linux, I thought it
was the latter. Apparently disabling just iptables wasn't enough I had
to disable ipchains as well. Now it is all good ....

(grrrrr to RH for enabling things that were disabled before)
