Excuse my butting in here, but I really do think that you, Peter, are
missing James's point. You are being just a little bit elitist and
assuming that he understands what you're telling him, while at the same
time he is telling you that he DOESN'T understand.

And I have to admit, that from the 'help' that's been posted here so
far, I am still no wiser about what James is supposed to do!

Are you telling him just to start typing something on his keyboard? If
so, this is very unnatural with no feedback on the monitor - all that's
there is the damned grey X. Yes - I'm in the same situation. I can hit
the keyboard till the cows come home, but NOTHING happens. And I assume
that is James's situation too?

So, Peter, stop being an elitist patronising know-it-all, and try doing
what you keep telling James to do - listen to what he is saying! Then,
with your obviously greater knowledge, you may actually be able to
provide him - and me - with some real help, rather than just repeating
hints of arcane command-line stuff and telling him he's an idiot.

Sorry if I sound a bit upset here, but I'm also pretty new to Linux, and
I get very pissed off when someone asks for help in these groups, and
the most common replies involve either "RTFM" or spout some totally
abstruse command-line code without actually explaining what it is and
what it does. We all have to learn, and while there are some genuinely
helpful people in these groups, there seems to be an elitist attitude
among many of "We know all this stuff, and if you don't then you're an
idiot".

End of rant <G>
