Much to the bain of IT guys at my work who refuse to help me at all until
I abandon all GUI, I am trying to install this through Gnome (RH9).
I extracted the file to: '/home/isofuncurves/VNC/vnc-3.3.7-x86_linux'
>From here I read the README file which says to run ./vncinstall. I did
this from terminal with the command: './vncinstall /usr/local/bin
/usr/local/man' which are the default recommended paths.
========output==========
[root@localhost vnc-3.3.7-x86_linux]# ./vncinstall /usr/local/bin
/usr/local/man
Can't install manual pages to /usr/local/man/man1
Copying Xvnc to /usr/local/bin
Copying vncviewer to /usr/local/bin
Copying vncpasswd to /usr/local/bin
Copying vncconnect to /usr/local/bin
Copying vncserver to /usr/local/bin
[root@localhost vnc-3.3.7-x86_linux]#
=======end output=======
I'm not sure what happened to the man pages? ...would help if I could
read them...
Now I run vncserver on my linux box:
=======output===========
[root@localhost vnc-3.3.7-x86_linux]# vncserver
New 'X' desktop is localhost.localdomain:3
Starting applications specified in /root/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /root/.vnc/localhost.localdomain:3.log
=======end output======
I think that I have 3 instances running. I'm not sure how to stop the
service...
Then from my win2k computer, I run PuTTY successfully. I then run VNC on
the win2k computer '192.168.2.39:1' [:2 or:3 depending on which
attempt...] and it asks me for the session password. I then get a large
gray box and a small console session that takes up about 1/9 of the
screen. I type startx and get an error message
fatal server error
server is already active for display 0...
I feel so close yet so far...
