Numeric Keypad not working anymore!

Hello all,
yesterday I , or rather the RedHat Up2Date, applied the latest updates
to my RH9. Among those updates were packages for XFree - I mention that
because *maybe* it's relevant!
Anyway, this a.m. I noticed that when typing into a GUI 'box', nothing
appeared when using the numeric keypad - and *yes* I did check the
'NumLock' - only slight pointer movements on hitting the keys. In the
other - text - consoles, the keys function normally.
I would make an uneducated guess that *something* in the graphical
interface has been fixed, even though it wasn't broken. If anyone has a
better suggestion, I'm 'all ears'.
TIA
Dave D.
