Ack! This is driving me crazy! I want to get Linux installed on an IBM
Thinkpad 760ED. First, the question:
Is it possible to start a Linux installation from a DOS C:> prompt?
If it makes a difference, I'm not married to the idea that it has to be Red
Hat or Fedora, but those are the CDs I already have. I'm happy to download
something else if it means the difference between getting this thing set up
the way I want it or not. Also, if it makes a difference, all it's to be
used for is word processing. No networking, nothing else. I'm not even
printing from it. All I need is to be able to save to a floppy disc.
Background, for those who want it, or who might have an alternate
suggestion:
As I'm sure some of you know, this little machine has one "slot" where the
floppy drive and the cd-rom switch in and out. So you can have one or the
other at any given time, but not both. You can switch them in and out while
the computer's running.
At the moment, the computer boots to the aforementioned C:> prompt, with
cd-rom support, if you boot it off the hard drive with the cd-rom in place.
It won't boot from the cd-rom, and as far as I know, there's no way to get
it to.
I can start it up with either a DOS or Linux boot disc in the floppy drive,
but then I'm stuck. The computer won't install the cd-rom driver if the
cd-rom's not present. Thus, my possibly stupid idea to start the
installation from a DOS prompt.
Well, I hope all that's coherent enough for anyone who might be able to
help...
