Replace compiler in 7.3?

Is it possible to replace gcc-2.96 in RH7.3 with another, more reliable
one without breaking anything?
If so, which one would be advisable, 2.95 or 3.x?
I assume it is not possible to have two different ones reside peacefully
in one system?
