boot off usb

I have a thinkpad a31p with a hd I dont wish to install rh9 on. If I add
another hd via the usb is there anyway I can boot off the cd (with the rh9
cd inserted) and command it to install rh9 onto the usb hd.
And from there forth boot into the usb hd if i need rh9 or the internal hd
if I need xp?
Has anyone done this?
