Log on at text console instead, and looksee what's up.

There is none. Auth error is the report of whatever is authorizing you
to log in via the login utility you are using. It sounds like gdm?
Anyway, it doesn't think you should be logging on through it.

Why? What would that accomplish? Is your home account on an nfs or
samba mount?

Kerberos? Please don't tell me that your home is on an nfs-kerberos
system? Yes - not having a home mounted might well kill off your
xinit startup scripts.
