Mail server help for use with phpbb

Hi, I'm pretty new to Linux. I am running RH9 on a home router based lan
with Cox internet. I have set up Apache2.0 and Mysql to serve up some web
pages for personal use. I am trying to set up phpbb but need a mail server
working for user messages and account authorization, etc.

What mail server should I be setting up? Anything come with RH9? I need a
pointer to some documentation. I will need to use a nonstandard port as Cox
blocks the standard ports. Also, since I am not registering a name what
will mail accounts look like? user@68.8.xx.xxx?

I was trying to use a free mail server at softhome.net but am running into
some errors that I haven't been successful diagnosing and would rather keep
everything "in-house" any way. I'll learn more that way.
