gconfd-2 insane memory usage

One of the workstations I'm responsible for just starting acting up
today. Root had not been logged in for several days, so to my
knowledge no system changes have been made. Users logging in to X
must now wait 30+ seconds to be fully logged in, and many programs
can't be run as a result of sustained excessive cpu/mem use.

Does anybody have an idea what might be causing this? I've been
trying to figure it out for some time now, but no luck. Thanks in
advance =)
