video snapshot

I am new to linux and I need help.
 
In my RH9.0 box I have one capture card and able to use mplayer or xawtv
to display live video of my garden via composite 1.

How do I (maybe use crontab to) take a snap shot in a fix interval
and watch the live video at the same time?

        or

Can I use motion-3.7.0 / mvc to take snap shot and watch video at the same time?
