If memory serves correct, it's:
select text to copy
left click
place cursor where you want text to be pasted
right click
At least, this is how most apps I've seen work. Gaim seems to be an
exception (Wingaim only probably). It's a little backwards at first, but
it's much faster than the Windowsesque:
select
right click
copy
place cursor where you want it pasted
right click
paste
or even the keyboard shortcuts
