MySQL install problems

Hello all,
I am trying to reinstall MySQL after uninstalling it serveral months
ago. I downloaded the latest version and after a few problems got it
to install (I thought). It got to the part where it was giving
instructions on how to set up the SQL administrator account by
"/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password etc.." but I am getting "no such
file or directory" when I try that command.

        package MySQL-server-4.0.22-0 is already installed
        package MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0 is already installed
        file /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.12.0.0 from install of
MySQL-shared-4.0.22-0 conflicts with file from package
MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0
        file /usr/lib/libmysqlclient_r.so.12.0.0 from install of
MySQL-shared-4.0.22-0 conflicts with file from package
MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0
        file /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.12.0.0 conflicts between
attempted installs of MySQL-shared-compat-4.0.21-0 and

I am a novice at this so I am not sure what to try next.
