ip forwarding/masquerading in FC3, openssh timeout?

What changed in Fedora Core 3 iptables that my ipforwarding/masquerading no
longer works?
I have the following line in /etc/sysconfig/iptables which never changed
since Fedora Core 1 (and worked perfectly):
-A POSTROUTING -o eth1 -j MASQUERADE
I also have net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 in /etc/sysctl.conf, so I am pretty sure
the settings are correct.
I can still access outside LAN from the server/router, but other LAN
machines cannot go outside, only access resources within the LAN. I will
have to check more on the log to see what's going on, but any hint is
appreciated, like an email with 'It works for me without change'.
Also, does openssh in FC3 have a hard timeout that it disconnects if there
is no key input, even though there is continuous output? I seem to remember
this problem way back with Red Hat old version which somehow got fixed, up
until FC3.
