upgrade glibc disaster

Running RH 9.
I tried to updgrade my stock glibc packages (glibc, glibc common, glibc
devel) to the latest updates from redhat, but rpm crashed with an
incomprehensible error message (sorry, can't remember what) while installing
one of them, leaving the system unusable.

It now won't boot at all (I get "Id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5
minutes" messages and the system hangs).

I can access the file system with the RH rescue mode, but have no idea how
to fix this problem. Can anything be done in this situation?
Thanks.
