I have never used dgkam. I always use kino (http://kino.schirmacher.de)
I would highly recommend that program.
For your question about getting the program to recognise camera
on firewire, I think you have to issue the following commands prior to
running the program;
modprobe ohci1394
modprobe video1394
modprobe raw1394
