Other than audio CDs, it works?
Linux plays audio CDs as an audio CD player (it is possible
to use, for example, cdda2wav to play them "digitally", that
is rip the sound and automatically dump to the sound device).
That is a separate volume control in the mixer.
Also, the only thing the computer does is control the original
volume and track settings. The sound does not go through the
data bus. There is a separate analog cable (there should be)
from the CD drive to the sound card. When playing an audio CD,
the computer just starts it and it plays without burdening the
system (with ripping, using the data bus, etc.). The later
versions of Windows media players can be configured to play
an Audio CD either digitally or in analog mode.
So, try turning up the various controls in aumix.
Check to see if you have the audio cable connected from
the CD drive to the soundcard.
