Please explain color control sequences for terminal

Check out the file "/etc/sysconfig/init" on your typical redhat distro.
It has some control sequences for changing terminal colors. These color
changes are used on bootup (for the "OK" or "FAILED" messages) and when
using /sbin/service (same as boot).
Can anyone explain to me how they work, and/or where I can get a more
definitive list of these control sequences?
