Thanks Bob, and also to Jeffrey for the previous post. All info much
appreciated, and I now have everything running as it should be.
Re the apt stuff - I uninstalled apt, then download the full quickstart
package from ATrpms and installed it - it includes apt optimized to use
multiple repositories. The version I had before choked if more than one
(eg FreshRPMs) was on there. Then I did an apt-upgrade followed by apt-
get install synaptic
Now I have Synaptic showing a HUGE number of modules from multiple
repositories - amazing :) Like a kid in a sweetshop! So I updated
Mozilla again from there, and now it all works, even when logged in as a
user, which is what I normally do to use the system as opposed to
managing the system.
So - thanks to all those helpful folks who replied to my pleas for help.
The spirit of Usenet is alive and well and living in this newsgroup <G>
Thank you all :)))
