    Pan does have the concept of read and unread, like every respectable
    reader, but the default filtering is broken: it only has buttons for
    filtering "New". So, to make it behave like, say, slrn, you need
    to create a custom filter which does "show if NEW or UNREAD".

    My "Mark as Read" marks everything just fine, regardless of the
    header cached status (is this what you mean by "local"?).

    I use Pan 0.14.0.
