Well, I haven't ever used a USB drive, let alone tried to install to one,
but, usually USB devices are seen by linux as scsi devices.
When you go to the install, and get to the point of partitioning, check
to see if you have an sda drive in the options to place your partitions.
You will probably want to forego the option of Disk Druid automatically
setting up the partitions for you.
As long as you don't go past the partitioning screens, you should not
hurt your existing system.
