I figured it out after I realized that there was no problem with my network
by using smbclient and successfully copying a file from my win2003 server to
the linux box using mget.

I then dove into the 2003 server and found that digital signing of all smb
mounts is now enabled during 2003 server installation.

Turning off digital signing resolved the problem.
