I was doing some more testing with the Fedora install, after the
install. Here are some additional findings.
In the Konquerer file manager like to have a single pane so I can more
clearly see the icons. I don't like clutter. To accomplish this I
turn off the treeview pane. That works ok. I also didn't like the
clutter of the closeness of the icons on the toolbar, and in RH9 I
found I could eliminate it by adding the text under the icons. This
created a slight problem. What happened is that after applying the
options for displaying text under the icons the small window that
houses the toolbars was missized and I couldn't resize it. Only a
portion of the text/icon info is visible because of how it is resized
improperly.
I'm testing on the machine at work, so I went to see if there was a
way to put the shortcut to the home directory back onto the desktop,
in one of my prior messages I stated that when i switched from gnome
desktop to kde I lost that icon. I found a way to do it but had some
problems.
I first tried to get properties of the Home app from the menu bar but
right clicking on it just opened the home folder. No biggy. In
windows you can right click and get a menu and choose properties. So,
in order to do this I right clicked on the redhat icon and chose menu
edit (edit menu). This allowed me to find the Home icon and get
properties. I copied the app command and then went to the link I had
created on the desktop to paste it into the command. This worked. I
then tested it. It worked. I then went and decided to rename it to
something other then "link to application". I changed it to home and
hit enter. It didn't take. It went back to link to application. The
good news is that the 2nd time I tried it it worked.
I then noticed, because when I setup the computer I hadn't put into it
a NIC. I added the nic and restarted the computer. This went well, I
was pleasently surprised at the graphic loader with the progress bar.
I do wish they'd get this in place earlier in the boot process. It
even opened a details window and prompted me for the NIC configuration
that I'd just put in. The nic I chose is one I have used before so I
knew the nic works and I knew RH9 had a driver for it. It went well.
I was happy.
Due to the fact that I hadn't had the nic installed when Fedora
installed I chose the defaults for setting date and time. In fact, a
friend of mine had set the date and time for me while I watched him.
I noticed, after the boot, that the date/time was wrong. The date was
off by several months. I corrected this. The time was also wrong so
I went looking for the option to specify that I wanted the system to
pull the time from a time server on the internet. I found it,
selected it and then the system appeared to lock. No mouse movement,
nothing. Rather then reboot I chose to give it some time. When it
was done it came back with an error stating it couldn't synch that it
had failed. It then came back with a message that I had cpu overload
and it would exit. Then when I noticed it actually had set the time
correctly.
I know the mobo is good because it is an RMA replacement from ASUS.
It also has been running for the past 24 hours without problems. I
had rebooted this morning after arriving at work so it was a clean
recent reboot. I also rebooted after installing the NIC so there's no
doubt it was something corrupted. The memory on the mobo is good to
as I used that memory to test other computers and have examined it
with memtest and various other installs over the past week or so.
I can only attribute this to a lack of detail on the part of the
Fedora project and the developers of the individual applications.
