RHL 8.0, updated, USB scanner quit working

I'm running RHL 8.0, and after updating the ethereal, glibc,
nscd, postgresql, and zebra packages via up2date, then
rebooting for good measure, my USB scanner no longer works.
The scanner had been working perfectly for many weeks. (The
package update _may_ be unrelated.) The scanner is an HP
ScanJet 6300C, in case it matters. There are no other
scanners, and I have not intentionally moved any USB
connections.

Dong 'sane-find-scanner' finds the scanner at
/dev/usb/scanner0, which is where the scanner has been
working from.

File /dev/usb/scanner0 (and the rest of them, too) are world
readable and writable.

Doing 'scanimage --list-devices' says no scanners were
identified.

Xsane says there are no devices available.

File /etc/sane.d/hp.conf is there, world readable, and with
the proper contents. (I keep an RCS archive of many of the
configuration files for reference.)

I tried removing my ~/.sane directory, tried running xsane
as root (yes, it says that's dangerous), tried power cycling
the scanner, tried unplugging and replugging the USB cable
to the scanner, tried doing rmmod and then modprobe on
'scanner'.

Doing 'lsusb' as root finds all manner of stuff about the
scanner, which would seem to prove the USB link to it is
working.

File /var/log/messages shows scanner.c attaching to
scanner0, which would appear to be a good thing. However,
when I unplug/replug the USB cable, I see the following
(line wrapped for slrn's benefit):

Nov 15 16:21:32 one kernel: usb.c: USB disconnect on device 00:1d.0-2
     address 4
Nov 15 16:22:12 one kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:1d.0-2, assigned
     address 5
Nov 15 16:22:12 one kernel: scanner.c: USB scanner device (0x03f0/0x0601)
     now attached to scanner0
Nov 15 16:22:15 one /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup scanner for USB product
     3f0/601/100
Nov 15 16:22:15 one /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup usbcam for USB product
     3f0/601/100
Nov 15 16:22:15 one /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Module setup usbcam for USB
     product 3f0/601/100

I don't recall having ever before seen the thing about
"setting usbcam" for the scanner, but that's not conclusive.
Could usbcam be stealing the scanner away from the scanner
driver or otherwise preventing it from working?

I checked Redhat's bugzilla but didn't find anything
relevant.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
