VESA or VGA

Which is preferable ? and why?
(for my XF86Conf)
(I have yet to be arsed to install drivers for my Kyro II after last time -
tried for a few days only to later discover the docs had mistakes!)
I'm currently using VESA and it seems the windowing system is gloopy (lol -
looks almost like its written in java)
Is normal VGA faster?
