mod_dav and mod_ssl

Hi all,
I was given a task to install mod_dav and mod_ssl on an existing Apache
1.3.27 running on RH8.0.
The webserver is already in production so I don't really want to cause any
trouble.
What is the safest way to install those two modules.
Or are they pretty safe to install?
Just run ./configure, make and make install?
