LDAP authentication?

Hi, I am using Shadow password and MDS password for authentication in RH8.0
box. I want to try LDAP. So, I unchecked the Shadow and MDS and then checked
the LDAP in the Authenticatin Configuration utility. After that, I could not
change to root. (I did not shut down and reboot). After I recheck Shadow and
MDS password and uncheck LDAP, it accepted root password again.
Do I need to shut down and reboot to let the LDAP authentication take place?
I worry that it would not take my root password after reboot.
Thank you.
Gary
