First of all, it is considered by many to be bad net etiquette
to cross-post to so many newsgroups. This is a Linux question,
so you should only post it to Linux group, such as comp.os.linux.misc
Now that that is out of the way, here are the steps I took to connect my
Linux Redhat9 system to a cable modem connection.
Click on the start menu (ie. the little icon that looks like a red hat)
Scroll up to the "System Tools" submenu.
Select the "Internet Connection Wizard".
You should now be at : Select "Device Type"
Select "Ethernet connection" from device type list.
Click on "Forward"
You should arrive at the "Select Ethernet Device" screen.
Select the appropriate device (ie. the type of network card in your PC).
Click on "Forward".
You should arrive at the "Configure Network Settings" screen.
Make sure the "Automatically obtain IP address settings with"
radio button is selected. In the list click on "DHCP".
Under DHCP settings make sure the "Automatically obtain DNS information
from provider" checkbox is checked.
Click on "Forward".
You should arrive at the "Create Ethernet Device" screen.
This screen will display the info you selected/entered on several of the
previous screens.
Click on "Apply".
You will arrive at the "Network Configuration" screen.
Make sure the checkbox under the "Profile" column in the devices list
for your ethernet device is checked.
Click on "File" and then click on "Save".
You will then receive a message advising you to restart your system.
It is a good idea to do so at this point.
Click on "OK"
After your PC reboots, start the "Internet Connection Wizard".
Select the entry for your ethernet device and then click "Activate".
The device status will change to "Active" once the connection has been
established.
