Problems getting output from C/C++ programs

I'm running kernel 2.2.5-15 (I think from Linux v 6.2) with gcc-2.91.66. I
can compile *.c and *.cpp programs, but when I execute them they hang, and I
get no output. Can someone suggest a fix OTHER than upgrading (unless there
is an error that upgrading will fix).
