This will take several weeks or months of concentrated effort on his part.
There is a gui called Swat which is helpful in building the smb.conf file
but it will not replace needing to know how to use a text editor and
basic linux commands. Setting up a printer and maybe a dsl connection
requires reading a lot of documentation. A user needs to use the text
command line from either from the black and white screen or from
inside Gnome or KDE.

He should erase the samba rpms that come with RH9 if they are even
installed and go to www.samba.org and download one large file, I
think 3.0.1 which includes the multiple rpms of RH9 2.2.8. The 3.x
package has some configuration already done. There is a RH9
binary (rpm) for Samba. There is a linux.samba usenet newsgroup.

This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared
toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with
exercises at the end of each chapter. For more advanced trainees it can be a
desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed
with system and network administration. This book contains many real life
examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network
administrator, trainer and consultant. We hope these examples will help you
to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel
encouraged to try out things on your own.

SH: I had two semesters of Linux in college and I found this Intro excellent
in covering the most basic pertinent information I learned in two semesters.
Your friend is in the position that he will need to read tutorials before he
can start to understand the Samba documentation. Though you tossed a
few buzzwords around I don't believe you have set up a Samba network,
sharing printers and internet connection, or you would have disabused your
friend of any notion of setting up Samba unless he plans to devote the time
to move from newcomer to qualified user and linux will be his primary hobby.
There are dozens and dozens of books and tutorials explaining Samba, since
it is not at all easy, especially for somebody coming from a Windows
history.

At Samba.org there is also a Samba HowTo which is quite comprehensive.
They have a link to a free O'Reilly book on Samba (Using Samba), but that
book is a little more dated (suitable as a guideline rather than current
correct instructions) than the free book listed below.
