I do not need NIS+, I removed per your suggestion.

/etc/nsswitch.conf now shows...
hosts: files dns

Yet invalid domains still resolve to my server's IP. I am totally baffled.
I went so far as to cd to /etc directory and then looked for all files in
/etc and subdirectories that contained either my server's IP or my server's
host name...

#grep -r xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx *
#grep -r mydomain.com *

I then looked at all files returned to see if any dealt with name
resolution in any way. I did not find any config file that might be
causing this behavior.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I guess I'm still searching for the cause.
If anybody else has a guess, no matter how remote or crazy, I would like to
try it. thanks.
