Im new to linux and have been running RH 9 for about a year. Now Im at
the point that I want to start adding some software to my system.
Recently I decided I wanted to install Gnutella. One of the depenent
programs needed to acomplish this is GTK. No problem until I saw the
dependent packages for the installation of GTK! Glib, ATK, Pango and
others. Well I began by installing Glib and all went well until
installing ATK when I got the following:
checking for GLIB - version >= 2.0.0... no
*** Could not run GLIB test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log
for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GLIB is incorrectly
installed.
configure: error:
*** GLIB 2.0.0 or better is required. The latest version of
*** GLIB is always available from ftp://ftp.gtk.org/.
While installing Pango I got the following:
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `fontconfig.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'fontconfig' found
checking for xft >= 2.0.0... Package xft was not found in the pkg-config
search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xft.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'xft' found
configure: error: *** Didn't find any of FreeType, X11, or Win32.
*** Must have at least one backend to build Pango.
There's lots here I don't understand. First I dont understand the
concept behind the PKG_CONFIG_PATH ennvironment variable. If this a way
to designate where packages are installed, so other software can find
other packages? Im really confused and frustrated at this point and hope
Im missing something really simple. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
