Thanks for the response. I checked the logs but they are pretty boring.
The only floppy references relate to the capacity (i.e. "Floppy
drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M") and the associated driver (i.e. "ide-floppy
driver 0.99newide"). The only possible concern is unrelated to floppies:
"DIT: Sun Feb 29 13:22:17 2004: 5102X: client 5 rejected from local
host" in the XFree86 log file.
The hang in the floppy access is repeatable (reset boot or full power
off reboot - same result).
I have obtained a copy of Mandrake and perhaps I will try it later and
see if it behaves any better.
I am getting deeply suspicious of a possible hardware compatibility
issue now.
