Does http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/java.html help you?
If you are using mozilla 1.4 or higher, you should use java 1.4
and make sure you link to the gcc32 directory of the plugins.

If you are using IE, I'm afraid your question is a bit off topic. If you
are running simple applets, your network config shouldn't influence the
capabilities of running java. But if your java applet opens a server
socket which is then accessed by another system (on the remote webserver
or so)... I'm afraid this won't work. Computer 2 cannot directly be
contacted by a computer on the internet. But this has nothing to do with
browser or java config, but is related to your specific network setup.
