i am also running redhat 9.

it may be that your system did not crash, but X crashed. i have had X
crash before where the keyboard, mouse and screen were locked. I know
that it was X (and not the whole system) because i have my computer on a
network and i was able to login from elsewhere and kill X.

crashes can be brought about by many things, it is hard to tell. A user
app should not crash the whole system (i suspect your X crashed).
However, i am also no linux expert.

one thing that i can recommend is updating to a new kernel. I found that
has helped me with crash situations before. On redhat 8 i had a system
that crashed all the time and i updated the kernel and that fixed
everything (well, all the crashing :))

if you don't know how to install a new kernel, let me know.
