I have two suggestions:
a) use apt-get (dag wiers repository) to install mozilla-j2re. will do
everything for you.

or

b) switch away from redhat and use a ported OS like FreeBSD. you wont have
to worry about how to install plugins because you can use ports or pkg_add
to do it for you.
